Where It All Began
In 2013, the City of Fallon launched a successful local commerce and tourism program called Live Local Fallon.
Never heard of Fallon? I’m not surprised, though it is the main filming location Top Gun. Little did I know that this patriotic cowboy town would spark my passion for community development and launch my career journey.
As the lead public relations intern for the City of Fallon’s Convention Center and Tourism Authority, I had the privilege of working with the Tourism Director to help develop, promote, and implement the Live Local program, in addition to other city events and initiatives. Due to the 2008 recession and economic downturn thereafter, many of Fallon’s businesses closed and the city’s economy declined. The Live Local Program was designed to stimulate local business, incentivize tourism along Route 66, and bolster community morale.
As one of the main liaisons between participants and the City, I began building strategic partnerships between local businesses, agencies, and community leaders. This launched my interest in media relations, donor relations, event management, and economic development. Excited to publically speak, I initiaited multiple presentations to stakeholders in local organizations and chamber of commerces. I also managed data collection and segmented audience analysis, inventory and delivery, promotional campaigns, and customer service. Yes, I even drove the grand prize car in local parades!
This PR internship ultimately led me to pursue my B.A. in Public Relations, gain various government relations and nonprofit experiences, and complete my Master’s in Public Administration. I now look ahead to even more meaningful work in local communities in the future!
